High School Competitive

SRA is one of the largest and strongest rowing programs in the country, consistently competing for State and National Championships. Rowing is a sport that rewards hard work, grit, and teamwork. SRA welcomes anyone who wants to show up with a good attitude and work hard to make boats go really fast!

While the SRA high school program is made up mainly of rowers from Saratoga Spring High School, there are also members of the program from the other area schools, including Ballston Spa, Corinth, Spa Catholic, Christian Brothers Academy, Queensbury, Schuylerville, and more!

Younger rowers can get their start by joining the Middle School program or our summer Youth Learn-to-Row program.

The SRA High School Competitive Program trains year-round. Here is what to expect during each phase of the calendar year.

SPRING

This is our primary racing season! We race through April and early May, leading up to the New York State Championship on Mother’s Day weekend. The team consistently performs well and has a history of qualifying for the USRowing Youth National Championship in June. Many NY State and National Championship crews have come out of the SRA boathouse.

FALL

Our Fall Season begins with preseason training in the last two weeks of August, followed by our official start after Labor Day. This long-distance racing season builds a strong base of aerobic fitness, strength, and technical skill. Fall racing is a fun way to mix up training while focusing on long-term development for the Spring Championship Season.

SUMMER

Summer is great for off-season skill development and fun racing opportunities. We row in the mornings, with optional strength & conditioning in the afternoon/evening. You can’t beat summer on the water in Saratoga!

WINTER

Winter Training is about becoming the fittest & toughest team for the Spring Season. The team does significant aerobic conditioning & strength training, and begins a more racing-specific phase. The work we put in and challenges we overcome are the foundation of our success in April, May, and June.
