Middle School Rowing

SRA is pleased to offer programs for middle school athletes of all ages. For 7th and 8th-grade athletes, our Modified Junior Competitive Program introduces athletes to the fundamentals of rowing and racing. For 4th through 6th grade athletes, Sculling Camp introduces athletes to rowing in a fun camp environment during the fall, spring, and summer seasons.

Modified Junior Competitive

Mods is for any athlete interested in rowing in 7th and 8th grade with seasons offered in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer! The focus of this program is to introduce athletes to the sport of rowing and build a strong foundational skill set for training and racing that can be built off of as athletes move to the High School Competitive Program. 

Sculling Camp

For youth entering 4th - 6th grade. 15 hours of on and off water instruction introducing youth to the sport of rowing, in a fun, summer camp atmosphere. Groups are limited to 10 athletes at a time to offer individual attention. Sign up for one or more weekly session. 

Week 1: June 30 - July 4, 2025 

Week 2: July 7 - July 11, 2025

Week 3: July 28 - Aug 1, 2025 

Week 4: Aug 11 - Aug 15, 2025

 

All sessions meet Monday - Friday, 8:30 am-11:30 am. Athletes progress from "coxed quads" (4 rowers and a coxswain) to doubles, and recreational singles and finally racing singles (as seen below).  

Modified Junior Competitive Schedule

FALL SEASON

From the first week of the school year through the first week of November

  • 3 to 4 practices per week, one of the practices is spent on land for strength and conditioning

  • Practices fall in the 3 to 6 timeslot

WINTER SEASON

Starts after Thanksgiving break and runs until February Break

  • Utilizing rowing machines (ergs), bikes, and strength training while the creek is frozen

  • 2 to 3 practices per week all indoors 

  • An optional indoor erg sprints race at the end of the season!

  • Practices fall in the 3pm to 6pm timeslot

SPRING SEASON

Runs from the beginning of March through the first week of June

  • 3 to 4 practices per week, one of the practices is spent on land for strength and conditioning

  • The first portion of the season is spent training on land until Fish Creek is thawed

  • Practices fall in the 3pm to 6pm timeslot

SUMMER SEASON

From the last week of June through the first week of August

  • Monday through Friday each week from roughly 10am to Noon
